A TRADITION GOING BACK 17 YEARS

OCTOBER 29-NOVEMBER 1, 2020

The Hellenic Foundation for Culture is pleased to invite you once again to participate in the 17th Thessaloniki International Book Fair (TBF). After it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 17th TBF will be held from October 29 to November 1, 2020, at the International Exhibition and Congress Center of Thessaloniki (TIF-Helexpo). It is organized by the Hellenic Foundation for Culture in collaboration with TIF-HELEXPO, the Municipality of Thessaloniki, associations of Greek publishers as well as independent publishers, with the support and cooperation of the Ministry of Culture and Sports. The 17th TBF is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund in the framework of the Regional Operational Program of Central Macedonia 2014-2020.
Adapting to the data related to the pandemic, the 17th TBF will carry out a parallel virtual program whose primary aim is the digital participation of significant foreign writers as well as the digital organization of part of the scheduled festivals, events and actions that revolve around the thematic areas and professional meetings highlighting issues of the domestic and the international book market. The main objective of the HFC is that the virtual form of the TBF will evolve into a digital platform through which the Thessaloniki Book Fair will extend its operation throughout the year.
Regarding the on-site program of the TBF 2020, in view of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 17th TBF in close cooperation with TIF-Helexpo and the relevant authorities makes certain that all the necessary measures will be applied in the premises of the book fair, as all the required Covid-19 Hygiene Protocols have been incorporated in its operation rules in order to ensure the well-being of all the participants, the visitors and the employees. In addition, so as to offer all people interested the opportunity to attend this year’s program of events, the virtual program of the TBF will be broadcast in specially designated areas of the book fair, and at the same time part of the on-site program of the TBF will be offered online through a specially designed platform. A new objective that the Thessaloniki International Book Fair has pursued since 2017 –and has more rigorously stressed since 2018– is to establish the space
for a more democratic public dialogue, where burning issues defining our day and age can be fearlessly and decidedly addressed as they have given rise to considerable controversy.
A book fair can merely raise questions, in much the same way as books put forward issues and attempt to explore possible solutions;
or rather, a book fair can try to sharpen the readers’ judgment so that they seek the answers to several questions themselves.

Record-breaking number of visitors, events and participants for the 16th Thessaloniki Book Fair

C urtain came down on the 16th Thessaloniki Book Fair (May 9-12, 2019), which is estimated to have been visited by 60,000 people, a figure which was higher by 10,000 compared to the number of visitors last year and exceeded considerably the number of visitors in the previous years. The fair developed a manifold program, which involved 500 events with 900 participants. The majority of the events were organized by 290 publishers, who claimed that they were satisfied with their participation and were left with the best impressions. Having the cutting-edge thematic areas of the book fair as their starting point, the events organized by the Hellenic Foundation for Culture and those organized by the publishers raised questions, sparked discussions and built channels of communication between writers and book professionals from all over the world.
