A TRADITION GOING BACK 17 YEARS

OCTOBER 29-MOVEMBER 1, 2020

ANNOUNCEMENT

In view of the measures already taken by the state
for the protection of citizens against the pandemic
and taking into consideration the ominous relevant predictions
about its development in the next two months both in
Greece and worldwide, we would like to inform you
that we have decided to postpone the Thessaloniki International Book Fair,
that was scheduled to take place on May 7-10, 2020.

This decision was made after lengthy consultations with Helexpo,
associations of publishers, the representatives of the country being
the Guest of Honor (Germany), and all the entities involved.

The new date set for the organization of the 17th TBF
is October 29 to November 1, 2020.

We would like to remind you that the tenure of the present Executive Board
of the Hellenic Foundation for Culture finishes on March 30, 2020.
Consequently, all the necessary actions for the organization
the 17th TBF will be taken by the new Executive Board.

A new objective that the Thessaloniki International Book Fair has pursued since 2017 –and has more rigorously stressed since 2018– is to establish the space
for a more democratic public dialogue, where burning issues defining our day and age can be fearlessly and decidedly addressed as they have given rise to considerable controversy.
A book fair can merely raise questions, in much the same way as books put forward issues and attempt to explore possible solutions;
or rather, a book fair can try to sharpen the readers’ judgment so that they seek the answers to several questions themselves.

Record-breaking number of visitors, events and participants for the 16th Thessaloniki Book Fair

C urtain came down on the 16th Thessaloniki Book Fair (May 9-12, 2019), which is estimated to have been visited by 60,000 people, a figure which was higher by 10,000 compared to the number of visitors last year and exceeded considerably the number of visitors in the previous years. The fair developed a manifold program, which involved 500 events with 900 participants. The majority of the events were organized by 290 publishers, who claimed that they were satisfied with their participation and were left with the best impressions. Having the cutting-edge thematic areas of the book fair as their starting point, the events organized by the Hellenic Foundation for Culture and those organized by the publishers raised questions, sparked discussions and built channels of communication between writers and book professionals from all over the world.
